Lab Assistant

Overview
The Processing Lab Assistant receives all laboratory specimens arriving from hospital, clinic and branches. Verifies that acceptance criteria are met with regard to patient identification, suitable specimen types, and recommends method of transport/storage. Performs registration and order entry functions as needed.

Responsibilities
Provides information to providers and phlebotomists regarding specimen requirements and tests. Receives and processes incoming lab specimens as appropriate. Assesses all specimens for appropriate labeling, specimen type and shipping conditions. Performs specimen registration and order entry in the EMR and Laboratory computer systems. Performs specimen processing and preparation as needed. May perform testing as assigned and in accordance with established protocols. Trains new staff members.
