This directorship is within MassDEP’s Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup (BWSC) whose mission is to implement M.G.L. Chapter 21E statute and administer its regulation, the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP, 310 CMR ), The Program has been set up to ensure timely and effective responses to over 1,500 environmental emergencies (e.g. oil spills, chemical fires) per year, as well as timely assessment and cleanup of the more than 58,000 confirmed and suspected hazardous waste sites across Massachusetts by the private parties responsible for them. BWSC seeks to determine who is responsible for responding to the release of oil and hazardous materials (OHM) and requiring those responsible or potentially responsible parties (PRPs) to perform the necessary work through a Licensed Site Professional (LSP).If a PRP does not perform the response action within the 21E and MCP-required timelines, MassDEP often performs the work.
