The responsibilities of the Clinical Nurse Specialist – ECLS Lead role is equally divided between expert clinical care and service development/standard setting. The Extracorporeal Life Support Service (ECLS) at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children was established in 1992, at the start of the UK neonatal respiratory national ECMO trial. It now provides mechanical life support to children with cardiorespiratory failure from birth to seventeen years of age as part of the UK National ECMO service.
